Eat & Run: Leaf-peep your way to Portage Tap House

tap house portage

DrinksThe big selection of draft beer (plus bottles) focuses on Maine brews. And on hot summer days, the Kennebago Kick, made with tequila, lime and grapefruit juices, and jalapeño simple syrup, is a standout cocktail.

Comfort food,

Aside from beer, pizza appears to be restaurant’s specialty. As tables filled up and the oven got to work, I started thinking about which one I’d order on my next trip to Rangeley, which I’ll never wait so long to take again. I sat at the large, horseshoe bar looking onto the wood-fired oven where the pizzas – including clam, meat lovers and vegan ($10-$16) – are made.

Location & Contact

Past downtown Rangeley in the village of Oquossoc, the elevated pub opened a couple years ago, adding a more modern food menu and extensive craft beer list to the area’s offerings. Their restaurant takes its name from the history of its location, on Carry Road. If you’d just paddled across windy Mooselookmeguntic and lugged a canoe overhead for more than a mile, you could do much worse than to find yourself in front of a piping-hot pizza and a cold beverage at Portage Tap House. When Portage Tap House opened, it had the only wood-fired oven in the area (since joined by Rangeley’s Furbish Brew House & Eats).

Portage Tap House is the Hangout Oquossoc Needed

That oven produces pizzas with thin but sturdy crusts and just the right bit of char dappling the edges. Pizzas come a variety of ways, from the classic margherita to clams on an oil-and-garlic-based pie to barbecue chicken. The latter, topped with brie, is especially hearty, and its barbecue sauce — which also graces baby back ribs and oven-roasted chicken wings — is made in-house with wild Maine blueberries and a balancing hit of chipotle pepper. There aren’t a ton of restaurants in town, but if you’re like me and need a dining destination to give your road trip purpose, plug the address for Portage Tap House into your GPS. Our kitchen closes 30 minutes prior to the time listed above. Create a commenting profile by providing an email address, password and display name.

Please note the display name will appear on screen when you participate. There are about a dozen Maine beers on tap, from breweries all over the state, along with ciders, seltzers and a couple old standbys, like Bud Light and Guinness. They’re all listed online, along with what’s headed for the draft lines next. With a Press Herald subscription, you can gift 5 articles each month. The menu for Centre Street Tap House may have changed since the last user update.

The open kitchen faces a rustic-industrial dining room with two antique canoes, strung with lights, suspended from the ceiling. The Reynoldses aimed to foster the feel of a proper hangout — a place that would eliminate the urge to drive into Rangeley for a night out. The biggest current obstacle is the staffing shortage that’s squeezing restaurants around the country.

Centre Street Tap House Reviews

The website lists only one menu for lunch and dinner, but it covers all the bases for what you might want at either meal. Appetizers range from a soft pretzel with beer cheese ($7) to pork lettuce wraps ($11). Entrees include sandwiches and burgers, from black bean to bison ($12-$15), as well as a pork chop, strip steak, salmon and duck with potato and vegetable sides.

Menus

Portage Tap House opened in 2019 with a menu that runs the price-point gamut from pub grub to wood-fired pizzas to New York strip steak. The idea was to create a come-one-come-all restaurant, good for grabbing wings and a beer or tucking into surf and turf and a nice glass of red wine. Even the dishes that skew casual get plenty of care and attention in chef Jamie Doyon’s kitchen. Corn on the cob, for instance, is prepared as a variation on Mexican street corn, but instead of grilling the corn, Doyon gives it a quick dip in the deep fryer, then drizzles it with chipotle mayo and garnishes it with fried onions. Overall, the Reynoldses set out to offer food that didn’t show up elsewhere in Rangeley or Oquossoc. Burgers aren’t hard to find in the area, but theirs is made with ground bison (as is their meatloaf) and topped with a sweet-savory heap of bacon-onion jam.

The clean, gray-dominated design is accented with symbols of the outdoor sporting life – a light fixture made from a canoe, oars leaning in a corner, an old sign for a lodge and a snowmobile map on the wall. For Laura and Paul, it’s another reason to get deeper into their new line of work — she’s been stepping in as sous chef, and he’s been washing dishes. I had a haddock sandwich ($14) that is no longer listed on the menu, and subbed out fries for a side salad ($2), which came with more than I expected, including cranberries, pecans, goat cheese and frizzled onions. I might have stuck with the fries if I had noticed the house salad description, but it would have been a mistake. It was a delicious addition to my meal and is available to order on its own ($6) with the option to add a protein, including haddock ($10), which I can also recommend. This was the first time I've been here and it was really nice. We had brunch with the adult kids and they really loved the build-your-own Bloody Mary bar.

The Cowfish Sushi Burger Bar

Top-notch gourmet burgers, gorgeous sushi, and a one-of-a-kind hybrid (called burgushi, which makes, say, sushi rolls out of traditional burger components) essentially mean Cowfish is three separate restaurants that are rolled into one. Locally owned, The Cowfish Sushi Burger Bar has been the perfect spot for a business lunch or a family night out since 2010. Order a bento box with a mini burger, a sushi roll, and sides or their signature burgushi, a fusion of both burgers and sushi.

Red Wine

Remember that while Cowfish makes efforts to accommodate guests with food allergies, cross-contamination may still be a possibility in a shared kitchen environment. If your food allergies are severe, it’s important to exercise caution and assess your personal level of comfort in dining at the restaurant. The sushi is made with fresh, high-quality ingredients, and the flavors are perfectly balanced. The burgers, on the other hand, are juicy, flavorful, and cooked to perfection. It’s truly a treat to experience the harmonious blend of flavors in each bite.

The restaurant has a vibrant and modern decor, creating a lively and energetic atmosphere.

One of the standout aspects of Cowfish is their menu, which is filled with an impressive selection of sushi rolls, specialty burgers, and creative dishes that blend the flavors and styles of both cuisines. Whether you’re a sushi enthusiast or a burger lover, there is something to satisfy every palate. The “Fusion Specialty Bento Box” is a must-try, offering a delightful combination of sushi, sliders, and flavorful sides that showcases the restaurant’s culinary creativity. Forget The Cowfish Sushi Burger Bar’s colorful, off-kilter decor or its nifty virtual aquariums (to help guests while away the time when waiting for a seat) – the real star of this highly unusual restaurant is its tri-fold menu.

Santa Monica failed to get its housing plan approved by the state by October 2022, leaving it open to builder’s remedy projects. What Watson experienced turned out to be a wholesale shift in how Santa Monica approaches new development. In February, a month before Grubb scored its approval, Gov. Gavin Newsom designated Santa Monica a “pro-housing community,” citing the city’s efforts and progress made through an affordable housing program. Project Roomkey was established in March 2020 as part of the state response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The purpose of Project Roomkey and Rehousing Strategy was to provide non-congregate shelter options, such as hotels and motels, for people experiencing homelessness, to protect human life, and to minimize strain on health care system capacity.

Affordable Care Act

By connecting students with critical resources, Project Rebound constructs an alternative to the revolving door policy of mass incarceration and increases community strength and safety. The number of units built in Santa Monica shrank last year, though the proportion of affordable housing increased. Around 66,436 people in Los Angeles County (including 41,000 people within LA city limits) experience homelessness, according to the 2020 Greater Los Angeles Homeless Count. According to Capital & Main, 2020 was an especially deadly year for the city's unhoused population.

The Hub of Hope in Suburban Station is a walk-in engagement center for people experiencing homelessness, and the Helen Brown Community Center is our community hub in the neighborhood. By streamlining certain housing approvals and incentivizing building housing on parking lots in residential zones, it got its housing plan approved by the state, closing the window for builder’s remedy projects. The City Council approved a more comprehensive rezoning that allowed taller mixed-use buildings along its commercial corridors.

Columbia cancels in-person classes amid Israel war protests

In 2016, for instance, voters were presented with a ballot measure that would have required citywide votes to construct buildings taller than two stories. A sizable minority — 44 percent — of voters were in support, though the measure failed to pass. This may be a surprise to anyone who has been trying to build in the city of Santa Monica over the last few decades, as shown by baffled reactions to the pro-housing designation on social media. But it wasn’t just the city’s speed that impressed Watson — it was how Santa Monica was now talking about building housing. She sat in on a number of City Council meetings, where planners and council members “recognized that the best way” to meet state housing goals was to allow for density.

Affordable Care Act

While the designation does open doors to funding, for Santa Monica, the stamp of approval seems to be more about reputation. The city has only applied for $1 million in emergency rental assistance through the prohousing program, but is “continuing to monitor other available potential funding opportunities,” according to the city spokesperson. Project HOME's supportive, affordable housing offers permanent housing for individuals and families who had been homeless.

The bill would mandate that when the Department of Education enforces federal anti-discrimination laws it uses a definition of antisemitism put forward by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance. WASHINGTON -- The House voted on Wednesday to pass the bipartisan Antisemitism Awareness Act, a vote that comes amid heightened concerns over antisemitism with Israel at war with Hamas and as pro-Palestinian protests have sprung up on college campuses across the country. We provide specialized services to young adults aged 18 to 24 who are at risk of homelessness. As antisemitism has surged to record levels since Hamas' attack on October 7, 2023, many Jews feel Israel requires more support now than ever - as a refuge for Jews, who have long been an oppressed minority. Even if they oppose Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's policies and the country's actions in Gaza, many Jews believe anti-Israel and anti-Zionist sentiment and even peaceful protest of Israel is itself antisemitic, because the concept of Israel as a Jewish homeland is core to Judaism. And some support the Israeli government's efforts to crush Hamas in Gaza. On Tuesday, Johnson announced "a House-wide effort to crack down on antisemitism on college campuses" at a news conference as House Republicans vowed to increase scrutiny of college campuses by expanding oversight efforts across multiple committees.

Within city government itself, “you have decision-makers who are very pro-housing,” Rand said. The real estate industry argued that the tax has crippled sales and new development, in similar fashion to Measure ULA in the city of Los Angeles. The shift to encouraging housing development did not come out of nowhere. Project 180 offers a number of diverse and award-winning programs suited for the various needs of our clients. Each fall Members of the Heating and Cooling Contractors Association (HACCA) volunteer to provide furnace maintenance checks and free repairs (sometimes even replacements) for homeowners enrolled in Project Houseworks. Most residents come to Project HOME from a safe haven, a shelter, or from the streets. In November 2020, a new phase of Project Roomkey began, called Project Roomkey and Rehousing Strategy. This new phase of the program built on existing emergency shelter efforts while also supporting permanent transitions to safe and stable housing to ensure homelessness is non-recurring. Since our beginning in 1989, Project HOME has been a leader in providing comprehensive and effective services to persons who experience chronic homelessness. With innovation, leadership, and an unyielding commitment to the dignity of each person, we have developed nationally recognized programs that have proven that homelessness can be solved.

"We had over 1,300 people die on the streets of Los Angeles last year for no other reason than they were poor, disproportionately people of color, disproportionately elderly," said Rowan Vansleve said, the CFO of Hope of the Valley Rescue Mission, the group that operates Tiny Homes Village. Tents and sidewalk encampments on city streets and parks have increasingly become a political issue. This spring, city police cleared a homeless encampment of some 100 tents at Echo Park Lake. "This, this was cool to me, you know, cause I got really tired of being homeless," she said. Before moving into the Red Barn, the nickname she's given her 8-by-8 foot house, Estella Ortiz had been homeless for six years. Not long ago, she was living on the same plot of land where the Tiny Homes Village now stands.

Approvals sometimes take up to two years if there are appeals involved. The California Governor's Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) Recovery Section acts as the grantee for FEMA’s Public Assistance Program. Tribal and local governments are among the entities eligible to apply for Public Assistance (i.e., a subgrant). This is the mechanism by which local governments and tribes will seek FEMA reimbursement for eligible Project Roomkey expenses.

While the spotlight for now is on campus protests, former President Donald Trump, now vying to win back the presidency, has also come under criticism for his rhetoric related to Jewish Americans. "Now it's up to Senator Schumer, the highest ranking Jewish official in America and in American history, to do something and bring this bill for a vote on the Senate floor," he said, urging the Senate to "quickly act on it." The House vote was 320 to 91 with 70 Democrats and 21 Republicans voting against the bill. The GOP opposition largely came from the right flank of the conference. Supporters of the legislation say it will help combat antisemitism on college campuses, but opponents say it overreaches and threatens to chill free speech.

This could be regular brushing and baths from you or a professional. Also putting a mat under their food and water bowls and a lid on a litter box helps to reduce dust in those areas of your home. All these steps leave you more time to snuggle your pet instead of cleaning up after them. If you or someone in your household has allergies or asthma, the battle doesn't stop at getting rid of dust. While dust mites are microscopic, their body parts and waste can be a potent allergen to those affected, causing sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes, congestion, difficulty breathing, and more. Many cultures already consider wearing shoes indoors a sign of disrespect, so you may already be enforcing this habit, but leaving shoes at the door is another way to cut back on dust.

These appliances come in a variety of shapes and sizes, from whole-house units to small, portable single-room models. The most common types of air purifiers for dust have a fan that circulates the air and a filter that captures dust and other pollutants. One of the best ways to get rid of dust and dirt on area rugs is to take them outside and beat them, just like in the old days. Rug beaters, which are usually made of rattan, wire, or plastic, are excellent dust removers and typically better at removing dust than vacuuming is. If possible, get rid of carpet in your home and switch to low-pile rugs. Carpet is a dust magnet and it holds onto dust despite routine vacuuming and cleaning.

Tips for Getting Rid of Household Dust

Dusting with a basic cloth is only going to move dust around and throw it into the air, making allergies and other problems worse. Use a damp cloth or a microfiber cloth to hold onto the dust instead of sending it flying. If you have a little extra in the budget, research air purifiers that help limit dust.

Groom Your Pets

I have my carpenters cut outside whenever possible, but for wood cuts that must be made indoors, I ask that they attach dust-collecting vacuums to their power saws. The same goes for sanders, especially those used by drywall contractors. It’s a good idea to follow this example if you’re doing the work yourself. Air purifiers, especially those with HEPA filters, can help remove dust from the air and keep your house cleaner. They can be particularly beneficial for people with allergies or asthma.

Consider Purchasing Filters

This device connects to your HVAC system to filter the air through your whole home. One popular cleaning hack is to place an old pillowcase over the blade one at a time. Pull the pillow case off the blade and trap all of the dirt and dust inside the pillowcase. Put this cleaning trick into your weekly rotation to prevent dust from building up. Getting your dog or cat on a more frequent grooming schedule can help reduce their shedding.

If you find that your home is particularly dust-ridden or you suffer from airborne allergies, investing in one of the best air purifiers to filter will make all the difference. Not only can this filter bacteria, pollen, and other pollutants in the air, but it can remove dust particles, too. Lampshades can be frustrating to clean because the dust rolls up. To prevent the clinging dust from pilling, Fritz says to first vacuum with a clean brush, then run a damp microfiber cloth across the surface every few weeks. For furniture and home decor with nooks and crannies, invest in a dusting brush that can reach the crevices. Once you’ve finished dusting the walls, it’s time to move on to the furniture.

As a word of caution—you may want to have your ceilings tested for asbestos if your home was constructed before the mid-1980s.

"Dust can be displaced by simple, everyday actions like sitting on a sofa or turning on air conditioning, becoming airborne before settling on surfaces," Dennis explains. "These surfaces include corners of walls and floors, skirting boards, the tops of photo frames and light fixtures, the backs of wardrobes, and window sills and shelving." If you have one of the best smart air conditioners, you’ll also need to remember to change the unit’s filters. Not only can dirty filters have a build-up of dust or germs, they can affect the overall quality of the air in your home. Use the attachments on your vacuum to clean couches, chairs, or other upholstered furniture.

Cleaning your pet's paws before coming into the house will also help stop the spread of dirt and dust. This $12 paw cleaner is a simple but effective answer to dirty paws and won't add anything to your weekly garbage output. If you do attempt to use one on a cat, we only ask that you record it and send us the footage. But the bigger challenge with bedding is that it captures all the dead skin particles from your body while you sleep. Wash your sheets once a week; wash your blankets, comforters and mattress pad once every month or two to help keep the dust down in your bedroom.

They recommend using microfiber cloths for dusting as they are designed to trap dust and stop it from circulating. They also suggest using a vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter for optimal dust removal. Do you ever look around your house only to notice dust here, there, and everywhere? A thorough vacuuming once a week, or even once a day, will go a long way toward eliminating dust. Many new bagless styles come with built-in HEPA filters, which trap even smaller particles of dirt and help freshen the air. Dead skin cells and dead hair are a major source of dust, and unfortunately, our furry friends produce a lot of hair.

Wash your bedding frequently

A tiny amount of avocado oil will treat and nourish your wood, according to Fritz. The top of the refrigerator and tops of the cabinets over your range is where the dust mixes with grease and sticks. You can use plain dish soap and hot water to wipe them down regularly. Cleaning wipes can also help, as they trap the debris in the mesh of the cloth. Biodegradable L’Avant cleaning wipes might just be the unsung hero of your kitchen.

Vacuum Vents

Remove the cushions to make sure you’re able to get into any tight spaces where dust could be hiding. There is likely a lot of hidden dust on walls, so while this can be a time-consuming task, it is worth the effort. Be sure to also wipe down doors, trim, and door knobs in the room. "Regularly vacuum your home, wipe down surfaces, and wash bedding and blankets," Parry says. Remember to include furniture and upholstery each time you vacuum, adds Henry Paterson, the senior operations executive at Housekeep. Opt for furniture that has smooth surfaces that are easy to clean and don't trap dust easily, says Muffetta Krueger, owner of Muffetta's Domestic Assistants.

Try a Few Dusting Hacks

Our homes are filled with airborne pollutants, dust, pollen, pet hair and more - and one way to reduce these different particles throughout the house is to invest in an air purifier. The purpose of an air purification system is to filter the air of dust and nasty allergens and bring a flow of fresh air back into your home. There are some great ways to keep your home less dusty, but over time the dust will always return. This is because dust is composed of elements found in every living situation. We shed dead skin cells and hair that add to the dust pile, and fabric particles from our clothes and linens also contribute to dust accumulation.

Easy Ways To Reduce Dust In Your House

Clearing off shelves and tables will make it easier to dust them, and you’ll also be removing potential problem areas where new dust can settle in the future. Stray cotton and polyester fibers from clothes, bedding, and pillows can be a major source of dust. The solution to both closet clutter and drifting dust particles is to put things in bags.

To reduce dust in your house, you can start with regular vacuuming as this removes a significant amount of dust. However, make sure your vacuum cleaner has a HEPA filter to prevent the dust from recirculating. Dusting with a damp cloth can also help, as it traps the dust rather than scattering it around. Additionally, using air purifiers can help capture airborne dust particles and improve the overall air quality.

Use its no-heat setting to tumble pet dander, dust, and pollen out of throw blankets, sofa cushion covers, even curtains. The tumbling action sends dust marching out of your home through the dryer vent. There are certain items in the home that attract dust, and knowing what they are—and how best to keep them dust-free— can help greatly when it comes to controlling and eliminating household dust.

Not only is this bad for your health, but a coating of dust on a plant’s leaves makes it difficult for them to absorb sunlight. Use a microfiber cloth to brush off the dust, and then polish the leaves with mayo to get them to glisten. Textiles not only capture dust and hold onto it—they create it too. Limit your throw pillows, blankets, and other textiles on your bed and other furniture to the essentials.

Another option I’ve seen work well is to install a temporary dust door. These plastic doors (around $20) open and close with zippers. Protective Products is the leading maker of them and other clever dust-control systems. For the path to the work area from the garage or door that leads outdoors, we usually lay down runners.

If you find yourself frequently frustrated by the amount of dusting you have to do, consider adding these to your home improvement checklist. "Washing bedding at a warm temperature once a week will help to reduce dust," says Lars. No matter how often you dust it can feel like the dust is still there. Cleaning experts say the best way to reduce dust is to change the way you tackle dusting.

For example, you can wash and change out your sheets every Sunday, vacuum every Friday, and wipe down hard surfaces another day of the week. The fibers in the carpet are a haven for debris and other allergens. While it may be impossible to eliminate carpeting from your home, especially if you're a renter, regularly cleaning carpets and area rugs can help.

When needed, swap out a dirty dusting tool for a clean one to prevent the spread of more dust throughout your indoor space. Wash your bedding (sheets and pillowcases) weekly in hot water (at least 130 degrees Fahrenheit) to reduce dust mites. Consider adding mattress and pillow protectors to inhibit dust mites from settling there. It's nearly impossible to keep dust from accumulating around your home, but there are some things you can do to prevent dust buildup from occurring frequently. Attempting to clean a surface with a heavy layer of dust will only push more particles into the air during the removal process—so the goal should be to avoid accumulation in the first place.

For hard surfaces like shelves or tables, a damp cloth can be used for dusting. Remember, regular cleaning is key to maintaining a dust-free home. Check the vents, and if you see a lot of caked-on dust, get up on a ladder and use a portable vacuum with the round brush attachment to get 99% of dust off the vent.

Charlotte Tilbury Magic Lip Oil Rose Lust & Berry Bliss

charlotte tilbury lip oil

At first sniff, you’ll immediately pick up Cosmic Power’s top notes of black pepper and cinnamon bark, followed by warm, cozy amber accord and vanilla bean. Tilbury describes the spicy-sweet fragrance as “empowerment in a bottle,” calling it invigorating yet enchanting at the same time. On the outside of the morganite glass bottle, you’ll notice the numerals “IX” etched onto the vial, along with a sacred heart with flames, which is said to symbolize all-encompassing, passionate, divine love. If you’re intrigued by a mix of gourmand and tart notes, with a touch of floral, Blay thinks you will love this scent—no pun intended. She is famous, like Dolly Parton, for sleeping in her makeup. Her eyes sparkle as she speaks with the runaway, chatty energy of a hostess welcoming you to a party.

YOUR BEST LIPS & SKIN DUOLIPS & SKIN DUO

The vibrant color of each vial was inspired by Tilbury’s love for crystals and gemstones, matching the shades to some of her favorite precious stones. You’ll also notice small Roman numerals underneath each perfume name, which Tilbury believes match the “energy” of each scent. To me, these numbers (while tiny on the bottles themselves), are a bit arbitrary to the fragrances, but I suppose they do add a certain je ne sais quoi to the collection's overall vibe. Collection of Emotions isn’t Tilbury’s first attempt at fragrance (she launched the limited edition Scent of a Dream back in August 2016). It’s also much more nuanced than just her favorite notes tossed together and thrown into a single perfume bottle.

They look plump and in good shape, in just a week’s worth of use. I absolutely love the soft shine this formula gives to the lips. It feels instantly soothing and hydrating and makes my lips look juicy without being ‘over-the-top’ shiny. These UNIVERSALLY FLATTERING pinky-rose and berry-toned hues love your lips and make them look instantly fuller, defining the lip contours and delivering a tinted, mirror-shine stain effect.

The Fragrances

It’s a nice little touch considering there’s no way to prevent lip products from landing on the tongue (and that I’ve tasted one too many irksome lip flavours). With over 30 years experience, Charlotte Tilbury MBE is the world's number 1 makeup artist and British beauty entrepreneur. Charlotte established Charlotte Tilbury Beauty in 2013, which is now a record-breaking beauty brand that has won over 400 awards. For supercharged skincare tips, tricks and expert advice, book your FREE virtual consultation with Team Tilbury now! As for the amethyst-colored glass bottle, the color purple is said to symbolize balance and restoration, similar to the pull of a new moon, which is etched on the front with the Roman numeral ‘VIII’. Drawing inspiration from fairytales, each bottle is encased in a box resembling a storybook.

COLLAGEN LIP BATHNEW! PILLOW TALK MEDIUM

I don’t think it can be compared to the texture of a lip balm or other lip products. The consistency feels like an opulent mix of water, oil and gel and it applies nicely to the lips. Since using the lip oil, I’ve noticed a significant improvement in the flakiness of my lips, so I’ll continue using this on its own and with my other must-have Charlotte Tilbury lip products for lasting hydration. The texture is really light and doesn’t feel sticky to wear. It’s really nice on it’s own and will make a great moisturising base or topcoat for lipstick too. Plus, the fact that it isn’t overly glossy means that men could use it as a nice flattering lip conditioner too.

What makes it magic?

This line emphasizes feelings of emotions you can construct with your olfactory system. Tilbury brought on a team of perfumers and scientists from International Flavors & Fragrance (IFF) to transform the powerful feelings she wished to evoke into six attention-grasping perfumes. To do so, they used what they call a proprietary “emotion-activating” AI algorithm called Scentcube.

CHARLOTTE’S MAGIC SKIN ON-THE-GO KITTRAVEL KIT

Flip it open to reveal the glass, potion-like vessel, reminiscent of the “Drink Me” vial in Alice in Wonderland. I wasn’t sold on the idea that my perfume had these transformative powers. Thinking about my perfume collection, though, I do have sultrier scents I reserve for date nights and bolder blends I spritz on before I walk into an important meeting.

LIP BALM

My AIRbrush Flawless Lip Blur is available in 8 FLAWLESS shades that were BORN BACKSTAGE, including my ICONIC Pillow Talk and Walk of No Shame hues! All products are independently selected by our editors. If you buy something, we may earn an affiliate commission. I have both the new tinted shades to show you. I absolutely adore Rose Lust, although Berry Bliss will be fab for something a tiny bit more intense.

Download the app now to discover Rose Lust for a rosy-pink lip glow and Berry Bliss for a just-kissed, berry-pink tint. One thing to know about me is that I never leave the house without some sort of lip gloss, oil, or balm in my handbag. I’m constantly rubbing my lips together, and the feeling is just not the same if the product isn’t hydrating (sorry liquid lipsticks). I’m always on the hunt for a product that will moisturize and stay put for a reasonable amount of time, so I looked to one of my go-to beauty brands, Charlotte Tilbury, to see what I could find. Charlotte Tilbury Magic Lip Oil Crystal Elixir is infused with crystal ingredients and has some big claims.

Silva is reserving this sexy fragrance strictly for date notes. “Awaken your senses with magic in a bottle,” Tilbury says of Magic Energy. With top notes of bergamot and myrtle (a white flower), this earthy scent sweetens up with jasmine and cashmere, along with a hint of palo santo, for a sensorial walk-through-the-forest experience. You’ll notice a star and the Roman numeral “I”— both symbols that represent “grounding energy,” according to Tilbury—etched onto the vibrant emerald green bottle.

As its name suggests, Joyphoria, a warm, floral fragrance, represents the mood-boosting effect of vitamin D. The subtly sweet vanilla scent is all too familiar in my fragrance lineup, but with the addition of coconut water accord and ylang-ylang, it brings a welcomed tropical twist to my norm. I tend to gravitate toward comforting yet sophisticated perfumes that remind me of the California sunshine, but still feel mature enough to wear at the office, and that’s exactly what Joyphoria is.

“However you want to feel and whoever you want to be, [you] choose the energy and vibration,” she says. ” asks Charlotte Tilbury to a small group of beauty editors and content creators in her London office. With the makeup artist and brand founder to be one of the first to learn about her top-secret Collection of Emotions perfume line—a project that’s been years in the making. Before applying the Lip Oil to my lips, I tested out the roller on the back of my hand.

Hi, I’m Hollie, and I’m passionate about everything beauty. Over the last decade and a half, I’ve tested thousands of products to bring you the best of the best! I also love bringing you fun and creative beauty looks.

As an overnight lip mask, it works delightfully well. Waking up to hydrated, perfectly conditioned and chap-free lips is bliss! I find that wearing this day and night really helps with the overall appearance of my lips. While I can’t say the oil has given me a lip filler effect, my lips are no longer as rough as before.

I’m a big fan of natural-looking lips, so the subtle color of the lip liner paired with the oil gives me an overall poutier appearance without looking like I’m wearing too much color. The hyaluronic acid formula revives my dry, flaky lips. You can shop the Charlotte Tilbury Collection of Emotions fragrances on Charlottetilbury.com for $150 each or a discovery set of all six scents for $30. As for the emotional impact More Sex alludes, Silva sees it as a fragrance that makes you want to roll your shoulders back and throw on a bold red lip before you strut out the door. But will she rotate More Sex into her everyday wear?

Exactly What Happened To The Costa Concordia?

sinking cruise liner

Costa Concordia was declared a "constructive total loss" by the cruise line's insurer, and her salvage was "one of the biggest maritime salvage operations". On 16 September 2013, the parbuckle salvage of the ship began, and by the early hours of 17 September, the ship was set upright on her underwater cradle. In July 2014, the ship was refloated using sponsons (flotation tanks) welded to her sides, and was towed 320 kilometres (200 mi) to her home port of Genoa for scrapping, which was completed in July 2017. An investigation focused on shortcomings in the procedures followed by Costa Concordia's crew and the actions of her captain, Francesco Schettino, who left the ship prematurely. He left about 300 passengers on board the sinking vessel, most of whom were rescued by helicopter or motorboats in the area.

Ocean Dream – 2016

In 1909, the Principessa Mafalda, an Italian cruise ship, sailed between Buenos Aires and Genoa. In 1927, a broken propeller shaft damaged the ship’s hull and sank the ship off the Brazilian coast, killing just over 300 people. Thirty-two people lost their lives when the Costa Concordia cruise ship struck a reef and subsequently began to sink in the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Greek Isles Cruises

The Costa Concordia, a haven of lavishness with sumptuous offerings, including four swimming pools, a casino, and a colossal spa, set the gold standard for luxury cruising. The seven-day Mediterranean sojourns quickly became iconic, treating guests to the enchanting shores of Italy, France, and Spain. This level of grandeur was unparalleled until the night it all ended in calamity. The night of this tragic event happened in real time for me as the news broke here in the United States. I was working and publishing news items to our forums and the home page of Cruise Addicts. It still is hard to believe that such an event could unfold as it did.

How did the evacuation of the Costa Concordia unfold?

Historic ruins, Greek Gods and relaxation await you on your Greek cruise with Norwegian. Climate change, however, introduces new challenges that the cruise industry must continue to adapt to in order to ensure passenger safety. Remember, awareness and preparedness can make a significant difference when venturing out on the vast expanse of the sea. Generally, cruise lines may be held liable for injuries, losses, or damages incurred as a result of their negligence. Compensation might cover medical expenses, lost belongings, and emotional distress.

Search for missing people

His duties to the passengers and crew bound by trust and safety were, by adjudged accounts, all but neglected. For Concordia survivor Georgia Ananias, the COVID-19 infections are just the latest evidence that passenger safety still isn’t a top priority for the cruise ship industry. Passengers aboard the Concordia were largely left on their own to find life jackets and a functioning lifeboat after the captain steered the ship close too shore in a stunt. He then delayed an evacuation order until it was too late, with lifeboats unable to lower because the ship was listing too heavily.

And for about 27 hours, Kwak believed his death was, if not certain, a definite possibility. The Costa Concordia tragedy occurred on January 13, 2012, when the cruise liner struck a reef and began to sink. The salvage workers successfully executed the most significant maritime salvage operation in history to refloat and remove the Costa Concordia from its resting place off the coast of Giglio Island. The luxury cruise ship Costa Concordia was owned by Costa Cruises, an Italian cruise line company.

Passengers and personnel

The Oceanos was a Greek cruise liner, sailing the South African coast from Cape Town to Durban, passing Coffee Bay off the Wild Coast, an area known for treacherous currents and ship wrecks. On board were 581 passengers and crew, sailing into a storm which would soon claim another ship. Due to the size of the explosion and the speed of listing, only six lifeboats could be launched, and in total 1,198 passengers and crew lost their lives, with 764 survivors. Important – I’ve also decided to keep this list to cruise ships (both ocean and river), and ocean liners that served as cruise ships.

He was charged with manslaughter as well as causing the wreck and abandoning ship. During the 19-month trial, prosecutors claimed that he was an “idiot,” while Schettino countered that his actions had saved lives and that he was being scapegoated. In addition, he noted the steering error by the helmsman, but a maritime expert testified that regardless of the mistake, the collision was unavoidable. In February 2015 Schettino was convicted on all charges and sentenced to more than 16 years in prison.

Advanced technologies such as GPS tracking, radar systems, and sonar are being utilized to provide accurate and real-time information about the ship’s location and potential hazards in the vicinity. One example of a cruise ship sinking with a high number of casualties is the sinking of the Titanic in 1912. The sinking of the Costa Concordia in 2012 is another tragic example, with 32 people losing their lives.

sinking cruise liner

The Costa Cruises ship sank after striking an underwater rock off the coast of Tuscany, sailing closer to the island than it should have done. Part of why these events become such captivating international news stories has a lot to do with their infrequent nature. When you take a look just at the last 50 years, there have been a total of 15 cruise ships that have sunk. Of these, five sinkings occurred when the cruise ships were carrying no passengers. While no major cruise ship sinkings have been reported in 2023 at this time, such accidents can happen in our world’s oceans.

In the wake of the trial, reflections on Captain Schettino‘s pivotal role entailed recognizing the stark contrast between his actions and the exemplary behavior expected of individuals in his command. It points to an overarching and pressing need for stringent adherence to the tenets of maritime conduct and the weighty responsibility resting on ship commanders. The ramifications of Captain Schettino’s decisions on that doomed voyage endure, as poignant lessons in accountability ripple through communities and industries worldwide. Before the rear segment is cut free, support vessels weld enormous air-filled metal boxes called caissons to its exposed starboard side. These are partly filled with water, adding weight that rotates the stern upright when it is cut free. On both sides these are filled and emptied of water, to reach the perfect level of buoyancy to keep the stern afloat.

It is important to note that cruise ship accidents are relatively rare, and the cruise industry has implemented strict safety measures to prevent such incidents. With the sinking Concordia losing its battle against the relentless water, an evacuation was not just necessary but imperative. The crew and passengers faced a night of uncertainty, forced to abandon the comforts of their cabins for lifeboats and, in some instances, into the open sea. As the evacuation unfolded, the stark contrast between the sinking of the Costa Concordia and the luxury it stood for before the accident couldn’t have been more pronounced. GIGLIO, Italy (AP) — Ten years have passed since the Costa Concordia cruise ship slammed into a reef and capsized off the Tuscan island of Giglio. But for the passengers on board and the residents who welcomed them ashore, the memories of that harrowing, freezing night remain vividly etched into their minds.

Although two crew members were killed as a result of the explosion, things could have been much worse if the ship was fully loaded with passengers and crew. While the loss of the cruise ship was undoubtedly newsworthy, its sinking was completely due to unforeseen and unavoidable circumstances. In the last 100 years, just shy of 2,000 people have lost their lives as a result of a cruise ship sinking. While tragic, it is worth noting that many of these losses occurred before the 1940s. The sinking of the MS Estonia (also previously named as Viking Sally) was one of history’s worst maritime disasters. The ship was sailing through the Baltic Sea when passengers and crew heard a bang followed by similar noises over the next few minutes.

As the wake of the Costa Concordia tragedy continued to spread, the legal repercussions for those involved were swift and significant, signaling a new chapter of accountability following the maritime disaster. The latest news on Costa Concordia reverberated through the corridors of justice as several crew members faced the consequences of that fateful night. The Costa Concordia shipwreck, challenging as it was, brought together numerous stakeholders, from environmentalists to engineers, all dedicated to mitigating its impact. Introducing oil booms and proactive fuel extraction efforts displayed an unwavering commitment to environmental stewardship.

The groundwork laid by this unfortunate event serves as a fulcrum for improved oversight within the maritime domain, reassuring those who venture across the seas. Let’s delve into the specifics — the cruise industry witnessed the birth of new lifesaving protocols and evacuation drills that were now to be completed before a ship could even leave the harbor. Crew members underwent extensive training, focusing on their assigned roles and emergency response techniques. It was evident that the prior status quo could no longer stand, with the cruise ship crash Italy event catalyzing change. We solemnly remember the concordia deaths that irreversibly marked the Costa Concordia’s profound tragedy.
